The Enabling Technology Laboratory (ETLab) is a research-oriented group within the Department of Mechanical Engineering. Established in 2002, ETLab consists of a group of faculty members, postdocs, programmers, graduate and undergraduate students. Currently, we have a research staff of 8, including 4 faculty members, 3 full-time programmers, and a High Performance Computing (HPC) system administrator. Its mission is to enable research at UAB involving HPC by providing advanced research tools, technical support, research infrastructure, and services to the engineering, science, and medical communities. Research interests at the ETLab include computer-aided geometry design (CAGD), numerical mesh generation, image processing, high performance computing, visualization, virtual environments, and game-based simulations . These research projects are funded by industry as well as governmental sources, including NASA, DOD, DOE, NSF and NIH. The ETLab maintains the UAB Shared HPC Facility that houses more than 2500 processors with 60 tons of cooling capacity. This facility was ranked in the World Top500 Supercomputer Sites twice since 2002. The ETLab is currently housed in the Business and Engineering Complex, in rooms BEC 154, BEC 155, and BEC 374, which amounts to over 3,000 square feet of space.
